Model United Nations
Homeschool students of all ages from across Texas join together to form team Strada for participation in Model United Nations Conferences. Model UN events are held all throughout the world. Most of our involvement is limited to Texas with one additional high school event in Oklahoma, but it doesn't have to be. If you have a desire to prep for a conference outside of Texas, I'm happy to help you do it! Here is a list of most of the conferences throughout the world.
This activity is an incredible way to put your speech and debate skills into practice. Above that, you will learn the art of diplomacy, negotiation, world events, geography, and so much more! I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the unscripted process of student leaders rising from among their peers within the committee rooms. On the flip side, if you're a student that's not sure if this is something you'd enjoy, this is the perfect venue to observe and learn more about the world around you. Other than stating your presence at the beginning of each new day, you won't be forced to say anything more.
Here's some information about our different groups and meetings. If this type of activity sounds like something you'd be interested in, we'd love to have you on our team!
HIGH SCHOOL TEAM
- Our high school team communicates by email on a Yahoo Group. An invitation will be sent to you once your enrollment form is received and processed. ( Download Enrollment Form )
- New students can join any time of the year.
- Camp is not required but helpful. In lieu of camp, we have a trainer that can cover the material via Skype.
- Students can pick and chose conferences that fit their schedule. They do not build on top of each other.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TEAM (7th -8th grade)
- Our middle school team communicates by email on a Yahoo Group. An invitation will be sent to you once your enrollment form is received and processed. ( Download Enrollment Form )
- There are three relatively close conferences that Middle School Students can participate in:
- GEMUN – a two day conference in Dallas held mid-May; It is a combination of Elementary and Middle School (4th -8th grade). Preparation information is detailed below in the Elementary section.
- MUNSW – a two day conference in Oklahoma held mid-November; It is separate from their MUNSW High School conference held later in February.
- UNA-Houston – a one day conference in Houston held late March in conjunction with their High School conference
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEAM (4th through 8th grade)
- Our Elementary Team prepares the entire year for the GEMUN conference in May. This year, our students will represent Iceland. GEMUN provides a well crafted handbook and two spring DFW student workshops. My role will be to work with our Elementary Parents to facilitate information, provide committee preparation guidance, and to coordinate the pieces for our country table display. Parents will provide direction and instruction for their students. Communications will be sent out through our Elementary Yahoo Group. Once I receive your Information Form, I'll send you an invitation to the loop.
COST
- There is no charge to participate in this group.
- Conferences each have their own set of registration fees. Please click here to get an estimate of what the conferences fees should look like for the new year.
- We have an Information Form because often schools will ask us on the registration documents which grade, how old, or when a student's birthday is. It's easier to collect this information up front rather than in the heat of the registration moment. Please download the Information Form and either email or mail it to me as soon as possible. Email: emailcharlotteray@yahoo.com or regular Mail to: Strada, 4729 Edenwood Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76123.
- We have a Yahoo Groups to keep everyone up to date. I'll use the email addresses off your application to send you an invite to the loop.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me anytime.
